Sharon Dutton has touched the lives of many students, and while some of them have pursued professional careers in music, most have simply enjoyed developing their own musical potential. She believes that everyone is musical, and with a bit of coaching, anyone can find and develop their musical potential.
Sharon’s teaching career has included adult and children’s community choirs, concert and jazz band rehearsals, preschool music programs, conference workshops, research presentations, and a successful private music studio. She also has considerable performance experience as a church musician, as a solo pianist, and (formerly) as the pianist for The Champagne Trio. Since retiring, Sharon enjoys playing her electric piano with a very active local community of semi-professional rock and blues musicians.
Sharon holds an A. Mus. in piano performance from Conservatory Canada, an ARCT in piano pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Music, a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Holistic Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (2015). She has a passionate interest in Dalcroze Eurhythmics (learning music through movement), and continues to take advanced classes where and when they are accessible. Dalcroze pedagogy is perfectly suited for children, especially as a precursor to private music lessons, but it also benefits music students of any level, as well as music theorists and performers, sometimes transforming their entire approach to music. Sharon is a certified Dalcroze instructor, still studying, working toward a Dalcroze License, and still exploring the relationships that exist between musical sound, expression, nature, and spirit.
